Little Birds (15:27)

This is the very first film I coproduced. Dennis Packard asked me to teach a class with him on “The Philosophy of Film.” So I kind of pushed him to actually do a film, and this was the result. A talented designer, Kelly Nield, took the class with us and ended up doing this remarkable titling. Another student, Jared Hess (now famous), was the director of photography. Toward the end of the shoot, the sound engineer came up to me completely pale faced, and told me that he had completely blown out the sound. So all the sound in the movie was re-created in a studio–a great learning experience for me. As I look back on it, I think that for a class effort it went really well. It was fun also to get to know the director, Miles Romney, a BYU alum that helped us. Also, composer James Guymon shows even at this early date his talent for melody. Monte Swain, accounting professor at BYU’s Marriott School, is the dad. Years ago, he was the bully in the early BYU/Church movie, “Cipher in the Snow.”
